Are you prepared for a disaster?
What kinds of difficulties would you encounter is you were to find yourself temporarily confined to your home, if your community lost its electricity, or if there were to be an event that interrupted your medication supply? Diabetics have to be more prepared than the average person, for many obvious reasons.
In a recent issue of the American Diabetes Association's journal, Diabetes Care, four physician authors explore the lessons the diabetics and the medical community learned from Hurricane Katrina.
To prepare for a disaster or similar event, ask yourself:
- What would I need for diabetic emergencies?
- What would I need for diabetic maintenance?
- What medical records or information should I have available?
- What contact information should I have available?
The answers to those questions can help you create an emergency kit. Beyond your medical preparedness, your local and national government can be a resource. Many governments have materials that can help coach you so that you are more likely to have sufficient food and clothing to make it through emergencies.
